Cylinder Boring - When Joe Minton was tech editor at Motorcyclist, he repeatedly said
there were only two places in all of the USA that he would
trust to bore cylinders: Fours n' More, and the Vance and
Hines main plant. [Adam's commentary: maybe this was true
30 years ago. honing is a difficult machining task that you
either get, or dont. lesser reputable or really small shops
will hone by hand, whereas larger shops will hone with a CNC
controlled machine and have specialized fixturing to properly
torque the cylinder to it's installed torque value. hones are
very accurate and sensitive machines to temperature and
material movements. if you hone without compressing it like
it is when installed between the case and head, it will move
once you get it in place. Two places in the country? NO.
Less than 100, yes.]

Porting - Eugene Klymenko has ported 400f's that
rival Kaz's bikes for HP [Adam: This is a case where I
would send it to someone who has a proven track record of
good port design. Experience is key in heads. The more you
do, the better you get (usually). When we develop a new head,
we hand port it, and check it on the flow bench. then do some
more, and retest. again and again until we're happy with the
results. We flow like the engine pulls, and we also reverse
flow to see how the port shape is changing the backflow.
basically lots of time and the right equipment would allow
you to create your own port shape. Since this is not
feasible, go with someone with a proven track record on your
head. DO NOT take it to someone who thinks a die grinder is
all you need to port a head. it's real easy to make a head
flow worse if you don't know anything about the shapes and
angles and curves that go into one. if this guy has a proven
port design and can replicate it, go with him]
